We often hear “I’m going to watch the film like this, I won’t have to read the book”. Nevertheless,  films can help children strengthen reading. Indeed, many films are based on books.

You can imagine challenges or games that offer to look for the differences between the film and the book. This will encourage the child to read in a simple and fun way. To get that, here is a list of kids movies that are based on books.

  1. Alice in Wonderland

    Alice in Wonderland  is a children’s literature classic that has several films based on the book by writer Lewis Carroll. You could choose the Disney classic, its more current version, or the other alternatives.

    Although not as well-known as Lewis Carroll, Pamela Lyndon Travers is the author of  Mary Poppins . It’s another classic that Disney adapted to the big screen a long time ago as well as a  remake  in 2018 to make the whole family happy.

    With this book, you will be able to ask the children  to describe and draw this fantastic and funny nanny. After the movie, they will be able to find out if it really is as they imagined it or not.

  3. Max and the Wilds, one of the children’s films based on books

    One of the most famous illustrated books in the world of children’s literature is that of Maurice Sendak. Children will discover the world of imagination. Comparing the differences between the illustrations in the book and the images from the movie of the monster can help children enjoy a wonderful book.

  4. Matilda

    One of the most well-known children’s films based on books is  Matilda. Who has forgotten the little heroine of this story with her characteristic bangs and always with a book under her arm? Or the big Bruce who eats a whole chocolate cake obligated by the nasty Headmistress Trunchbull?

    The characteristic details of each of the characters will make children easily identify them from the start of the movie after reading this fun and wonderful story.

  5. Harry potter

    The films of the Harry Potter saga  are, without doubt, the most famous children’s films today. 

    On this occasion, due to the length of his books and the small details that JK Rowling includes in them, it is mandatory to read the books first before seeing the movies. Indeed, these details are not always present in the films.

  6. Charlie and the chocolate factory

    Roald Dahl, one of the most famous authors of children’s literature, has adapted two of his works for cinema. This allowed him to acquire the notoriety that he has today.

    Children will have fun drawing Mr. Wonka’s chocolate factory while they read the book. Then they will be amazed at the oompa loompa and how the interior of the chocolate factory looks.

  7. The jungle Book

    The author of this other Disney classic wanted to develop the fantastic idea that a child  is raised by animals,  which children like so much.

    Having children imagine Mowgli, Baloo or Bagheera will be a very fun experience.

  8. The Wizard of Oz

    The oldest children’s film on this list is  The Wizard of Oz . Indeed, it dates from 1900. It was only adapted for cinema 40 years later. It is one of the most famous musicals.
