The main debate has to do with the fact that this sport demands a lot from young children. This includes both physical demands, through complicated and sometimes dangerous movements. There is also the mental side. Remember that children need to memorize and synchronize complex dance steps.

The sport has also been linked to physical problems, such as the late onset of menarche. Studies conducted in elite athletes over the past decades have confirmed these effects of rhythmic gymnastics. Added to this are the possible injuries that all sports involve.

In addition,  the fact of participating in competitions and submitting to the evaluation of a jury – sometimes too rigorous – can be difficult for them. Even more, of course, if they don’t get the results they hope for.
