Teaching Children To Make Study Patterns – Parenting

Teach children to make study diagrams

Making study diagrams is a good way to synthesize information in order to better memorize concepts and knowledge. It is convenient to teach this study technique to children from an early age, so that they learn to study effectively and efficiently.

In this sense, it is necessary to keep in mind that the diagrams are only one more step that must be taken in the complex task of studying. We can therefore distinguish the following five phases of the study:

  • Reading-comprehension
  • Highlighted
  • Synthesis
  • Memorization
  • Self evaluation

In the study, when the synthesis phase is reached, strategies for organizing and developing information should be used to modify the content to make it easier to assimilate and remember. For this purpose, it is possible to make diagrams.

Study diagrams connect and represent, visually and clearly, the main and secondary ideas of a text. Therefore, their great advantage over other synthesis techniques, such as summaries, is that they allow relevant information to be captured at a glance. But different types of schemes can be put in place, depending on what needs to be studied:

  • Comparative. They are used to compare characteristics and easily observe information.
  • Hierarchical. These are the ones used to organize and classify the ideas of a text, integrating some concepts into others.
  • Sequenced. Necessary to order information sequentially, according to various variables (the passage of time, changes in shape, changes in characteristics, etc.)

It is important to impart this knowledge about study patterns to children. But, to learn this study technique, it is not enough to know the theory. It also takes a lot of practice.

Parents should therefore accompany the children during the study sessions and help them develop the first patterns, so that they can gradually achieve them independently.

Characteristics of good study designs

It should be noted that, to make a good diagram, you have to follow several steps:

  1. Read the text carefully.
  2. Select and underline the main and secondary ideas.
  3. Think of a title that is a synthesis of the text.
  4. Choose the type of diagram to be produced.
  5. Divide the text into general sections and subsections.
  6. Put each idea in a different section and formulate it succinctly and precisely.

Likewise, it is necessary that the study schemes fulfill a series of characteristics:

  • All the main ideas must be integrated.
  • The main ideas of the text should be highlighted and clearly linked.
  • The diagram should follow a logical structure, with main and secondary ideas well organized.
  • The presentation should be clean so that the content can be understood quickly.
  • It should be written in almost telegraphic language, using keywords or short, straightforward sentences.

By following these tips, children can learn to develop appropriate patterns to achieve good academic results. This way, students can get a general idea of the subjects being studied at a glance. This is beneficial for easily acquiring, assimilating, understanding and memorizing information. It takes work, time and effort, but it’s worth it!
